EAT, DIGEST & GROW

Developed within the framework of the Master in Design Through New Materials, this thesis investigates Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) as a strategy to transform construction waste and marine shells into sustainable bio-bricks.

By cultivating microalgae (Arthrospira platensis) and combining recycled aggregates, the project explores biomineralization as a low-carbon alternative to traditional cement.

Beyond the experimental outcome, the research positions material as a living system — capable of capturing carbon, structuring matter and redefining the ecological footprint of construction.
